Tips for introducing your child to Dance.

Angelina Ballerina is a bit of a hero at our house. A love of the little dancing mouse has sparked much twirling and leaping about and with that an insistence on taking a dance class. Extracurricular lessons of any kind are wonderful for developing children’s social skills, confidence and concentration. Dance in particular is wonderful for refining their motor skills and developing an appreciation for music. While the benefits of a dance class is clear there is usually many different options in each town- and in the city the possibilities are endless. How do you decide which dance style or school best suits your little Princess or Prince? Pretty Princess has prepared a guide to help you make the best decision for your child’s introduction to the world of dance.

What Style?
There are five different styles of Ballet- and the dance world doesn’t stop there! Even Angelina Ballerina enjoys hip-hop and jazz. How can you best decide which style will suit your child? Pop some popcorn and settle down to watch some YouTube clips of different styles with your little one. Explore jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, modern, ballroom and anything else that is available in your local area for children their age.  If they are really wowed by what they see in one particular style then investigate studios that offer that dance variety.

Which School?
Teaching Style
There are so many! Visit the school during a class if you can. Some classes are very strict and form based others are more relaxed and focus on expression. Some schools will work to examinations and levels while others will not offer any formal measurement of ability.  You know your child best and will be the best judge of which kind of environment they will thrive in.

Cost
Don’t forget to get the whole picture on costs before you sign up. Class fees vary wildly between schools and there are sometimes hidden costs. Remember to ask:

·         Is there a sign up fee or yearly fee?
·         Will we have to buy costumes? How often?
·         Do we purchase tickets to recitals? How much do they cost?
·         Will there be extra time and financial commitments expected at performance times?
·         Is there a specific uniform? How much does it cost?

A school that looks very cheap initially may quickly become expensive with a lot of side fees!

Values
Do you know your dance schools values? You will need to consider what kind of music and dance moves your comfortable with for your child. Some schools are very progressive and may use music that includes swearing and/or adult themes. If you aren’t comfortable with that be sure to check what kind of music the school has used in the past and how they choose their music and moves- do parents get a say in it?
Most schools require children to wear a little makeup for recitals, some require a spray tan and hair pieces! Decide where your limits are and make sure the school you pick lines up with your budget and family values on cosmetics.
Classic ballet costumes are reasonable predictable but some other styles may use revealing costumes. Check the schools costume policy and look at photos of past performances to check that you will feel comfortable with the clothes your child is expected to wear and perform in.

A Successful Start!
If your child tends to shyness then preparation is everything! Think about watching a class and meeting the teacher before they start officially. Listen to similar music at home and watch some more YouTube clips in their chosen style (or maybe some Angelina Ballerina!).
If the school doesn’t have a specific uniform be sure to choose comfortable soft clothing to practice in. Some brands available are beautiful to look at but stiff and uncomfortable to move in. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on looks though. Pretty Princess stocks the beautiful FLO dancewear. Designed by former ballerina Felicia Leoncelli these pieces are soft to touch, beautiful to look at and perfect for ‘playing dancing, or resting!’ Check out the perfectly pink Jewel Cap Leotard, made from a luxurious breathable fabric it won’t cause itching and fidgeting! Pair it up with the divine Diamante Tutu for the perfect Ballerina ensemble without the stiff unmovable skirt.

Valentine's Day Ideas.

Likely Valentine’s Day looks an awful lot different since you've become a parent! It can be hard to get babysitters on February 14th so often the traditional date night isn't on the table- but that doesn't write off Valentine’s Day just yet! Pretty Princess has some great ideas for parents (and kids!) to celebrate love!

Although little princes and princesses aren't usually thinking about romance just yet Valentine’s Day provides a perfect opportunity to talk about what it means to be in love. Modeling great relationships is one way kids learn what they can expect out of love so take this opportunity to talk about your own love story. Take out the photo albums and talk about when you fell in love, how you committed to one another and of course how excited you were to see your family grow as a result of love! Make a little storybook about your family’s journey in love and have the kids illustrate it or paste in photographs- way better than any old fairytale now you can read the real thing at bedtime!

If you haven’t already discovered Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages now is the perfect time! Check out the website and talk with your kids about the ways in which you and your partner express your love for one another and the way you both express your love for them. Ask your kids what makes them feel most loved- you might be surprised what you find out! My four-year-old Princess feels most loved when I make her “delicious things” and my three-year-old little Prince knows I love him “when I give him a biggest hugest cuddle”.

Valentine’s Day just wouldn't be complete without something sweet! Try making Recipegirl’s delicious Red Velvet Pancakes with a sweet cream cheese topping! Even if you don’t have the cookie cutters to create heart shaped pancakes the red colour alone makes these tasty treats perfect for Valentine’s.

Love is definitely worth celebrating; don’t give up on doing something special as a couple just because a babysitter proved elusive! There are thousands of date night ideas available online, try to find something you will both enjoy- as elaborate as a sit down candle-lit dinner, as simple as popcorn and a dvd, as silly as building a fort in the loungeroom!

Have a beautiful Love Day!

Back To School.

School goes back in just a couple of weeks and many are preparing for their little ones very first day of Big School! Nervousness, excitement, sadness and everything in between, it can be with mixed emotions that we send our little ones off. If this is the big year for your family then you’re probably busy worrying about how your child will get along, if they have the right equipment and will they eat their lunch? But in the midst of all the practical preparations don’t forget the fun stuff! Pretty Princess has compiled some ideas to help make the start of school extra special!

Make Memories

Most people will take a picture of their child in school uniform on their first day, maybe in front of the house or the school- but there are some amazing ideas out there to give the traditional first day photo something extra.

You could use an App or computer program to insert words like in this beautiful picture from Allenaim Photography:

Or make some creative use of blackboards like this one from Smile and Wave:

Smile and Wave

If you don’t have any blackboards you could achieve the same effect with some decorated poster board.

Another sweet idea to capture this moment in time is to conduct a Back to School Interview. Your future big-schooler will feel very special and grown up while you ask them questions about their likes and dislikes and it will be great fun to look back over their answers in the future!  You could collate all their interviews and photos into a book come graduation. To make interviewing your little princess or prince extra easy head over to Petite Lemon where you can download a printable interview sheet for free!

Super Big Kid Breakfast

You’ve probably spent a lot of time planning lunch boxes and organizing snacks in the lead up to the big day but what about the rest of the day?  You’ll want to send them off to school with a healthy breakfast- but health doesn’t preclude fun!
What about Super-Fluffy Wholemeal Pancakes? Top with fruit salad and a tiny bit of maple syrup. Your little one will be delighted with their extra special big-kid breakfast and it will give them plenty of energy for their big day! You might be busy getting ready in the morning so make the pancake mix and the fruit salad the night before, they’ll keep in the fridge and it’ll take no time to fry the pancakes up come breakfast time!

Congratulations Afternoon Tea

Anything out of the usual will delight them. Cookies and milk or out for an ice cream, enjoying a yummy afternoon tea together will be the perfect opportunity to hear all about their big day!

A special gift and a new tradition

Now your little one is a big school kid they’ll be learning to write more and more. They can practice their writing as well as record their first year of school in pictures with a Nightime Drawing Journal!

The Coterie Blog

Receiving their own special book and perhaps some new pencils will make them feel extra grown up. Explain how journals are used and give them a little quiet time each evening to draw their day. You’ll see more and more words’ appearing as the year goes on and at the end of the year it will be a special record of their development and learning as well as all the fun they've had!

Something for the Grown-ups!

Once the kids are tucked away for the night don’t forget to celebrate your own success! Big school is milestone for the child and for the parents. You've done a great job for the last 5 years, you've got them this far and that’s worth celebrating! Have a glass of bubbly, a special dessert or have an at-home-date. You deserve it! Congratulations Parents!
